History of Astrology

The modern man is studying about sun, moon and the planets. All these are present in the sky, traveling through it, in a fixed manner. We as a man of new era think that we know a lot about them—still this sky have so many mysteries in it. Moreover there is ancient or pseudo science still in practice.

Astronomy is a scientific study of sun, moon and stars where astrology is an ancient science that is about the supposed effect of these heavenly bodies on human life.

It is the most ancient study which is still believed. It was thought that it begin some 3000 years back but recent studies showed that it have its roots deep down in the cloudy past. But the clear picture of astronomical observation begins with the Mesopotamia civilization. They recognized the prominent constellations and also the planets. Later Babylonians were true astronomers--introduce the zodiac and their number system helped to develop the modern measurements of astronomical minutes and seconds.  After that Greeks used the animal circle (zodiac). They used their own and previous knowledge not only in astronomy but also in astrology. “Astrology” is a Greek word which means “Science of Stars”. It was their believe that the sun and the planets orbiting the earth have influence on living creature on earth and by their movement and position fate of humans can be predicted.

Later Chinese start practicing this art and they were the first to use astrology for knowing about seasons for planting and cropping. Somewhere in 500 BC Plato studied astrology and made further improvements so astrology not only remained alive but it was spread on through ages. By the invention of telescope in 1500 by Galileo the popularity of astrology declined but later it again got popularity in Egypt in 300 BC. In the middle age Catholic Churches become the voice of the age, though astrology practice was not set to an end but it was hided. It was William Lilly; an astrologer in 1600’s who gave astrology a new name ‘Christian Astrology’—to make it acceptable again.

By the beginning of scientific revolution astronomy gained admiration but astrology was down turned again. Then again in 1930 the birth of Princess Margaret opened the chapter of astrology again. Astrology gained fame again when London Sunday Express published an astrological profile of Princess Margaret to celebrate her birth—so the modern horoscope column started. Millions of people in this scientific era still have firm believe on astrology and they daily go through there horoscope to know how there day will pass and what will be there future.
